Take my hand and
know that you are honored here.
After your long march to freedom,
you are safe in this spaciousness of hope
where food and warmth are abundant.
When you thrive, we will all survive
in this messiness of humanity.
Come be my neighbor.
Commentary on “Neighbor”
As I watched the news, night after night and witnessed the river of humanity attempting to find safety, I could only cry. There for the grace of God go thee. “Neighbor” is my small response to the catastrophe that we created in the Middle East and has engulfed Europe.
When will we learn that war only creates more war? There is no peace. There are no winners. When the children grow up and can remember only hunger, cold, sickness, fear, and death, we will ask ourselves ‘why are they angry.’ Our responsibility for the destruction of humanity should rip at our hearts and cause us to say ‘come be my neighbor.’
